The Golden Rule of Customer Service

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Yes, the Golden Rule.

Does this “Rule” apply to customer service? Of course. But, do we see this inspirational and practical rule put into effect often? Not really. On occasion? Yes. And wouldn’t you agree that any time you have a Golden Rule moment in any interaction with a business—in person or on the phone –that you find yourself saying “wow”! They were so awesome!! They went out of their way to help me!!” This kind of service is so rare that you are pleasantly surprised.

Well, what if every one of your clients, customers, patients felt the same way each and every time they had an encounter with you? Does that take extra effort, extra attentiveness, extra, professionalism, and extra kindness? Yes. But the wonderful thing about Living by the Golden Rule is that, truly, when you give to another, you receive abundantly. You receive faithful clients, increased business, good recommendations, referrals, etc. But, mostly—you receive a good feeling in your heart. Because, indeed, “it is better to give than to receive.”

The better you take care of people, the better your referrals will be. The better you take care of people, the better the interactions with them will be. Some people may be difficult at first encounter. But, if and when you faithfully listen, give support, and offer kindness, they will reflect that. You will find that even the most difficult of people soften when they learn to trust your sincerity and kindness toward them. Be a source of service to your clients. Be a source of friendliness.

Live by the Golden Rule. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Both of you will benefit.
