Intuition is a spiritual faculty and does not explain,

but simply points the way.

Florence Scovel Shinn

In the classic movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Roy Neary encounters a UFO and becomes obsessed with an odd shape of a mountain. He feels an unstoppable urge to know what the mountain is, and starts to see this form in his shaving cream and mashed potatoes. Eventually Roy builds a mud-model of the mountain in his living room, at which point his wife and children leave him. Finally, frustrated and exhausted, Roy gives up and writes his intuition off as a pipe dream. At that moment a news program flashes a report showing the exact mountain, complete with location, that Roy has intuitively been searching for – or which has been searching for him.

Neary hurries to the mountain in Wyoming, where he encounters a small group of other people who have been guided by the same vision. They share identical stories of being so preoccupied with this image that they felt compelled to follow its lead.

This story serves as a metaphor for how guidance moves us on our spiritual path. Dr. Wayne Dyer notes, “Motivation is when you take hold of an idea. Inspiration is when an idea takes hold of you.” While you may think you are pursuing your dream, your dream is pursuing you to follow it unto reality.

Visions, dreams, inclinations, urges, intuitions, and hunches are calling you, often for reasons you do not understand. If you are true to them, they will reveal their purpose to you, one that will serve you as well as others.

Today trust the visions that inspire you and follow them. The intellect rarely understands the ways of the heart, so you must trust and have faith in your inner longings. Regard them as guidance from a higher power, and you may find that they have a lofty purpose. Then you will find yourself in the company of those whose hearts’ desires match yours.

What is your intuition guiding you to do? How can you follow it today?

I trust my knowing.

I move with my inner guidance

to wonderful new places in my life.
