Wellness: The Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce, Part 1

Syd Hoffman is a fitness , nutritional , and wellness expert . I had the privilege of spending a day with her in Phoenix last month. She took me through a workout plan, nutrition plan and total well-being plan.

One of the things we did was go to Whole Foods together and went up and down every aisle studying labels , learning good from bad (yes , even at Whole Foods). We designed menus for home and travel and even explored ways to substitute some of the unhealthy things my husband loves– like chips–with a healthier choice.

I learned more about pesticides in foods, the horrible impact of processed foods on the body and learned which seemingly healthy foods ” hold” pesticides and therefore make it valuable to look for organic ones if these food types.

According to the Environmental Work Group there are actually 14 “dirty foods” here are their Dirty Dozen PLUS:

  1. apples
  2. celery
  3. cherry tomatoes
  4. cucumbers
  5. grapes
  6. hot peppers
  7. nectarines – imported
  8. peaches
  9. potatoes
  10. spinach
  11. strawberries
  12. sweet bell peppers
  13. kale
  14. summer squash
